Applications 3D recently provided their expert 3d scanning and reverse engineering services for a charitable cause. This was done for the Desert Snow Program, which honors the best law enforcement offices at an annual ceremony.

The 3D reverse engineering process starts off by a laser 3d scan or white light scan of the part. A collection of 3D measurement points is then exported from the scanning system. This point cloud is then processed into a 3D stl model. Using this stl as a reference, many downstream applications can be performed, such as the one mentioned above. In this case, the watertight stl model was used to create an actual prototype on a 3D SLA printing machine.
