Laser Scanning

Laser Scanning from our 3D Scanning and Reverse Engineering Services

Anything can be scanned and converted into a working CAD model that fits your need where all standard file formats are supported. These files are fully compatible with all major CAD software, including SOLIDWORKS®, Solid Edge®, CATIA®, Siemens NX®,  Pro/ENGINEER®, Autodesk Inventor®, PTC Creo®, and many others .

Portable laser scanning comes to your facility for same-day scanning. With the usage of the Faro blue light scanner, the collection of 3D measurement data becomes even easier immediately after setup. This is one of the best solutions for rapid onsite scanning.

3D Scanning Process

3d scanning service process

Parts are first digitized using one of our 3D Scanning, non-contact devices. Then, the resulting point cloud is processed into an STL mesh. Further, reverse engineering is done by surface modeling the STL into a full engineering-grade CAD model. At this time the model can then be further processed as a fully parametric 3D model as a native file for your CAD software. Any of these CAD models are then used to create fully detailed 2D Engineering drawing prints, which are used for manufacturing!

The 3D scan data results are also used to validate parts or updated existing CAD models to as-built models. Detailed GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing), PPAP (Production Part Approval Process), full 100% inspection layouts, and first article inspection reports are also generated directly from the scan data.

3D Scanning and Reverse Engineering Services

This video is an example of our white light 3D scanning process and reverse engineering. A turbocharger compressor wheel is 3D scanned and converted from a physical part to a CAD model. Initially, the scanner captures the wheel as a point cloud. Then, all individual scans from different vantage points are aligned together using millions of points to best fit one another. At this time the resulting aligned point cloud is processed into a triangular STL mesh. Finally, the STL is then used to identify different features on the part, create major surfaces, trim them with each other, add transitions and fillets, and then stitch them into a design intent 3D CAD model. Nevertheless, this video is an example of just one of our 3D scanning services.

Learn more about these 3D processes

  • 3D scanning is the process of capturing the shape of an object using a variety of technologies. The resulting 3D data can be used to create a digital model of the object, which can be used for a variety of purposes, such as reverse engineering, product design, and 3D printing.

  • 3D scanning has become increasingly popular in recent years due to the decreasing cost of scanners and the increasing availability of 3D printing technology. 3D scanning is now being used in a variety of industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and entertainment.

  • There are different types of 3D scanners available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common type of 3D scanner is the contact scanner, which uses a probe to touch the surface of the object being scanned. Contact scanners are typically very accurate, but they can be slow and difficult to use for large objects.

  • Optical 3D scanners use lasers or cameras to capture the shape of the object being scanned. Optical scanners are typically faster and easier to use than contact scanners, but they are not as accurate.

  • The best type of 3D scanner for a particular application will depend on the specific requirements of the project. For example, if you need to create a highly accurate model of an object, you will need to use a contact scanner. However, if you need to create a quick and easy model of an object, you can use an optical scanner.

  • Once you have scanned an object, you can use the resulting 3D data to create a digital model of the object. This digital model can be used for a variety of purposes, such as reverse engineering, product design, and 3D printing.

  • Reverse engineering is the process of taking an existing object and creating a digital model of it. This can be useful for a variety of purposes, such as creating a spare part for a broken object or creating a new product based on an existing design.

  • Product design is the process of creating a new product. 3D scanning can be used to create digital models of objects that can then be used to design new products. This can save time and money, as it eliminates the need to create physical prototypes.

  • 3D printing is the process of creating a physical object from a digital model. 3D scanning can be used to create digital models of objects that can then be 3D printed. This can be useful for a variety of purposes, such as creating custom parts, creating prototypes, and creating finished products.

  • 3D scanning is a powerful tool that can be used for a variety of purposes. The technology is becoming increasingly affordable and accessible, and it is being used in a variety of industries. If you are looking for a way to create digital models of objects, 3D scanning is a great option.
